Agar.io was originally created by a user of 4chan’s /v/ (Video Games) board where it was first posted on April 28, 2015. The domain name for the game was created the same day, and was named Agar.io, derived from the name of agar, a jelly-like substance, after it was proposed by an anonymous poster. The game was posted to Steam Greenlight on May 3, where it was promptly greenlit.

In Agar.io, the player takes on the role of a blob, with the goal being to grow larger by engulfing pellets as well as other players. The player can split into smaller blobs through several means, such as by pressing the Space Bar and being driven into spinning blades.

A subreddit for the game was created at /r/Agario on April 29. A small Russian-language Wikia for the game was created around the same time.On May 2, Let’s Player ZeRoyalKing uploaded a YouTube video of himself playing the game, which gained over 50,000 views over the next few days. On May 3, video game stream channel Vinesauce uploaded footage from a stream of the game, which gained over 25,000 views.
